Two Fine Antique Signed Coalbrookdale Cast Iron Display dish Wall plates C1875. Its difficult to imagine what working at Coalbrookdale in the 19th century was like. They were regarded as one of the best Iron works in the world, renowned for the quality of their castings. In 1875 they produced a 1032 page cataloque showing the scale & quality of what they could make. It is certain something like these grand wall plaques would have been pictured in those pages.
Although both are presented with some faults, the crispness & quality of the casting is obvious. Sadly items like these were much copied including what appears to be recasts using worn out moulds. But these are easy to spot despite peoples claims they are Coalbrookdale, they lack the crispness of the casting, the fine detail & most important the signature of the foundry as shown here. Please do study the images these are lovely items & are a great examples of Victorian taste.
This object (as shown in the picture) stands roughly 20.5cm wide. One has a small missing centre section & a crack to the metalk work from the rim inwards.
The other has a fine cvrack from the edge. Despite the faults both are stable, strong & display very well.
