It depicts Napoleon in his general's uniform, wearing the characteristic French bicorn hat. (These were made in Berlin and Sayn until the 1830s).

The production of fine Berlin ironware has a long and interesting history. It is the result of the technical progress achieved since the 16th century in the foundries founded by the Prussian nobility. Iron experienced a boom as a decorative material in revolutionary France in the 1790s, when pieces of jewelry made of iron salvaged from the ruins of the Bastille inspired Prussian manufactories to produce filigree black iron jewelry from the purest iron available.

Detailed molds were carved in wax and placed in molds filled with fine sand. Molten metal was poured in to create objects that, after cooling and hardening, were finished by hand and coated with linseed oil to prevent rust. With the opening of the Royal Iron Foundry in 1804 on the northern outskirts of Berlin, Berlin's ironware production became even more closely associated with the state. Production soon expanded to include a range of decorative objects that included small statues and figures as well as architectural elements such as the iron bridge in Berlin's Charlottenburg Park.
