ANTIQUE CAST IRON BUSTS OF ST PETER & PAUL BY CROWLEY & Co MANCHESTER JEAN WARIN
ANTIQUE CAST IRON BUSTS OF ST PETER & PAUL BY CROWLEY & Co MANCHESTER JEAN WARIN. Excellent condition with no damage chips or cracks to note, super quality castings from the English company Crowley & Co Manchester, Circa 1860 approximately (Victorian period). These two figures are depictions of St Peter and St Paul originally done by renowned Sculptor Jean Warin circa 1660, rare to find these especially as a pair, these were most likely mounted on a frame as both have small pin holes near the top, could be remounted on nice frames if desired. I think these were originally gilded with some type of brass or gold finish originally as if you look closely on the pictures you can see light remains of a gold coloured finish or gilding, excellent condition overall with superb detail for cast iron castings, lovely pair. I have added some pictures and some information regarding Jean Warin the original sculptor of these items, obviously this pair are not manufactured by Jean Warin, as stated they are "after" Jean Warin but i like to add as much background info as possible. See pictures for measurements and condition also. Jean Varin or Warin was a French sculptor and engraver who made important innovations in the process of minting coins. Born in Liège, Varin moved to Paris in 1626. After demonstrating talent as an engraver, he obtained the support of Cardinal Richelieu and in 1647 was appointed head of the French mint.
